Many people who enjoy wine on a regular basis may not fully understand just how important it is to properly store wine. With the rich complexities of wine it is imperative to store it properly or risk losing some of the wonderful subtleties that it contains. Care must be taken because wine does not last forever it does in fact have a fixed shelf life. With the proper care the shelf life of a bottle of wine can be greatly extended. This is defiantly something to keep in mind when you start to think about just how expensive some wine can be.
Basic information on wine storage
The biggest and most important rule about wine storage is that wine likes the dark, wine also likes cool temperatures. Ideally wine should be stored in a dark wine cellar at about 55 degrees fahrenheit with a relative humidity of about 80%.
Wine has classically been stored in wine cellars. That worked well in the past when people had houses with cellars, It may be slightly more difficult to find an apartment in say New York City with a cellar.
Technology has come to the rescue of people who don’t have ready access to a safe stable cellar though. You can pick up a small refrigerator designed to store wine, they do a really good job of keeping the temperature and humidity constant. There are literally hundreds if not thousands to chose from, ranging in size from being able hold a bottle or two up to being able to hold hundreds of bottles.
Some of the better ones come with a tinted front glass panel if they have glass or a solid door. If you are going to buy a refrigerator to aid in your wine storage make sure that the glass door is tinted dark or not there at all.
How should I orient the bottles in my storage area?
One of the largest mistakes people make when storing wine is to store it standing up in the vertical position. The way good wine, that is wine that is sealed with a cork maintains its freshness is from the cork.
Corks need moisture to work, if a bottle of wine is stored in the vertical position the cork can and will dry out. Once the cork drys out you can be that your bottle of wine is going to start losing flavor and develop weird tastes.
By keeping the wine on its side, or horizontal you allow the cork to sit in the wine and that keeps it moist. A moist cork is a happy cork that makes a tight seal.
In closing please take the time to store you wine properly. It doesn’t take much effort and the pay offs will be great. You will not have to worry about spoiling a $400.00 bottle of wine.

Have you ever wanted to throw a wine and cheese party? We’re you
worried about what you would need, how time consuming it would be or
that it would be too expensive? You can put those fears to rest once
and for all. If you don’t know much about wine and cheese throwing a
wine and cheese party is a great way to get you and your friends to
try some new wine and cheese and have a fun night together.
Party Invitations
Invitations to a wine and cheese party are really a good idea if
you’re throwing a more formal party. This shows your guests what the
tempo and feel of the party will be. Wine and cheese party invitations
are usually on heavy stock and show bottles of wine and grapes. The
fonts they use can range from sharp and sexy to relaxed and mellow. You
can also find blank wine and cheese party invitations that you can
fill in with you’re own script for that personal touch to them.
Room layout
Depending on what type of room you will be using for your wine and
cheese party you should consider the following layouts. If your room
is a large open room with a long wall you may want to use a long table
down one side with the wine and cheese grouped together by region or
how well the go together. If you’re room is smaller or oddly shaped
you may want to use smaller tables throughout the room with one group
of cheese and wine on each table.
Wine and Cheese Party decorations
You should also keep in mind what decorations you would like to have.
If the party is a formal type then you would want white table cloths
with antique looking plates, knives and glasses. If the party is more
laid back then you may want small little throw away plates, knives, and
glasses. You should also keep in mind what type of wine you’re serving
and have the correct style glass for each type of wine, red wines
should be served from a rounded wine glass, white wines should be
served from more fluted glasses.
Things to server at a Wine and Cheese Party
You will be serving wine and cheese for sure but you may also want to
give your guests the option of something else to eat with the wine and
cheese that will complement the flavors they are already enjoying.
Some good safe bets are various fruits, bread, crackers and if you
really would like to go the extra mile you can serve caviar and
cheesecake with some coffee for dessert.
Wine and Cheese Party Gift Baskets
Depending on the type of party you are throwing it may be acceptable
to have gift baskets to give away at the end of the evening. There are
several places on the internet to order gourmet wine gift baskets for
your guests. You don’t have to spend much to get some very nice
looking gourmet wine and cheese gift baskets and some can be found for
under $5.00.
